Chapter

Eleven

Despite many of the new changes to Cordelia’s life being those that she longed for, she was happy to be doing something as normal as going over to Miss Jessie’s for brunch.

Miss Jessie was as close to a mother as she’d had. She’d never been adopted because once prospective parents discovered that she was the little girl who’d been taken from the site of that gangland massacre, they always declined to proceed any farther, until finally, Cordelia had asked Jessie not to put her name forth anymore. That she was happy where she was, being fostered by Miss Jessie.

That situation had been unusual too, as most often social workers involved in a child’s case weren’t allowed to foster them, but somehow, it had never been a question.

Probably because of Dragomir, she now knew.

Cordelia tried to push those thoughts out of her mind. Thoughts of Dragomir, romantic thoughts about Ryan, her past, and even her future. She wanted to live in the moment. To enjoy these times for what they were, without expectation.

So she didn’t ask Ryan to drive her, or offer to pick him up. She just drove across town and walked into the warm, welcoming home where she’d spent so much of her life.

Jessie was in the kitchen finishing up the French toast, and the scents of cinnamon and vanilla washed over her.

She watched her foster mother move around the kitchen and she was instantly transported back to her happiest memories. Those times when she felt the safest, the most loved.

“Can I help?”

Jessie looked up and had a warm smile for her. “Set the table?”

Cordelia picked up the cloth napkins, and the silverware and began to set the table. Even now, she still thought the cloth napkins were extra fancy. It made her feel special that Jessie was using them, and her fine china.

“I hope you brought your appetite. I might’ve made a little too much.”

“With Ryan and me eating, you know there’s no such thing.”

Jessie wiped her hands on the bright yellow apron she wore. “I suppose you’re right about that.” She looked at the heaping plates of food. “Maybe I should have made more so you’d have some to take home?” Jessie moved her sharp gaze to Cordelia. “Are you eating enough? You look a little tired.”

“I’m fine.” Cordelia reached out and squeezed her shoulder. “I promise.”

I mean, I’ve been letting a vampyr suck my blood, so that might account for the bags under my eyes. Oh yeah, and there’s a shadow thing that wants to eat me, but I’m fiiiinnnnee.

“That smells so good,” Ryan said from the doorway.

“Well, it’s ready. So you bring your butt in here and pour the mimosas.”

Cordelia remembered when her “mimosas” were just sparkling grape juice and orange juice. A wave of nostalgia washed over her.

“You don’t by chance have any sparkling grape juice, do you?”

Jessie’s blue eyes warmed and the crinkles around her eyes became more prominent as she smiled wide. “Of course, I do.”

“I’d have thought after the week you’ve had, you’d want the champagne,” Ryan said.
